In 2010 Sheremetyevo Posts New Record, Transports 19.329.000 Passengers
The fastest growing major European airport posted 31% growth year on year.
Sheremetyevo International Airport served some 19,329,000 passengers in 2010, 31% more than in 2009. This is a record number of served passengers for the airport. The number of passengers on international flights (IFs) grew by 24%, reaching the figure of 12.3 million passengers, while the segment of domestic flights (DFs) grew by 44% (7 million passengers).
There were 184,488 take-offs and landings served in the airport in 2010, which is 16.3% more year on year.
Record growth in the number of transported passengers was declared by Aeroflot, Avianova and Transaero. Most popular destinations included St. Petersburg, Antalya, Paris, Istanbul, Prague, Beijing and Sharm el-Sheikh.
In December 2010 the number of passengers served in Sheremetyevo grew by 21% and reached the figure of 1,4 million.
Ten new transportation companies came to the airport in 2010, including Avianova, Martinair (cargo company), China Eastern, Donbassaero, WINDROSE, TNT Airways, China Southern, Polyot, Orenburg Airlines and HongKong Airlines.
The largest in Eastern Europe Southern Airport Terminal Facility (SAFT) entered into full-swing operation in 2010. The facility joins together terminals D, E and F, and the AeroExpress Railroad Terminal. SAFT spans more than 400,000 square meters and is able to serve 25 million people a year. The dynamic development of the infrastructure and the opening of additional terminals created the necessary conditions for the development of Sheremetyevo International Airport as the leading airport hub in Russia and Eastern Europe.
In 2010 Sheremetyevo became the fastest growing airport in Europe and Russia. According to ACI Europe (International Airport Council — European Division), in November 2010 Sheremetyevo led the rest of major European airports (servicing from 10 to 25 million passengers a year), and the growth amounted to 28.4%. Other two of the top three airports are Domodedovo (16.2%) and Helsinki (13.6%). Sheremetyevo has created an effective competitive environment allowing air companies to choose operators to provide the main services, terminal operation and handling services, which helps improve quality, make the airport more attractive on the market of air transportation, and maintain high levels of popularity and loyalty among passengers. These factors contributed to the success of Sheremetyevo Airport in the past year.
In 2011 Sheremetyevo expects to keep the dynamic growth trend for most operation indicators, taking into consideration the development of the plane park, opening of new flights for Aeroflot, the company based at the airport, relocation of a part of the wide-body plan fleet of Transaero, intensive growth of economy-class flights by Avianova, and attraction of new passenger, cargo and business transportation companies.
